Saccharomyces boulardii is a distinct yeast strain, separate from Baker's yeast, and is free from milk components. It is considered a probiotic, or beneficial living organism, with demonstrated positive effects on maintaining intestinal microbalance when consumed in sufficient quantities.
Unlike naturally occurring gut flora, S. boulardii is not significantly affected by antibiotic use. When taken orally, it reaches stable levels in the colon within three days but does not establish permanent colonization in the intestinal tract.
Typically, it is expelled from the intestines within 2 to 5 days after discontinuation. Each capsule of Saccharomyces boulardii contains 235 mg, providing a minimum of 4 billion live organisms at the time of manufacturing.
